Thursday 18th September 2008 – Cardiff

Aims and Objectives
Wales has the largest proportion of workless households of any of the constituent parts of the UK, 14% as opposed to 11.8% in England and Northern Ireland, and 11.6% in Scotland.
Office of National Statistics, September 2007

Worklessness is a considerable drain on public resources and has profound negative implications for individuals and households. It is associated with long term poverty and poor mental health. There are also intergenerational effects through child poverty and attitudes towards work which can create successive cycles of social exclusion.

None of these issues can be tackled without forging effective working partnerships between the public, voluntary and private sector, including support from local employers from large businesses through to small and medium sized enterprises.

Councils and their partners are best placed to understand local issues through local knowledge and how to target certain areas of worklessness. This interactive seminar focuses on identifying practical measures and solutions through real-life examples of success and best practice across Wales.
